I got papers for Unlock Democracy's internal council election.

WTH is this all about? " No candidate may pro-actively campaign for election online, or allow anyone else to campaign on their behalf."

What does "Britain's leading campaign for democracy, rights and freedoms" find wrong with campaigning online?

Call for support - Make your MP work... let alone harder!

A mantra of the Yes to Fairer Votes campaign was 'Make your MP work harder'. In our part of the woods certainly, there is at least one who views his service as a part time job - even admitting this in his publicity.

Abuses of democracy take place almost everywhere you look. Here we shall look at one man’s crusade to support the Conservatives in Bournemouth – by menace.

Dave Wells is a slum landlord in Boscombe. He has been notorious for his poor housing and cavalier attitude to housing law since the 1970’s. He has been accused of threats with firearms, and has spent over 4 ½ years in jail, which he uses to ‘encourage’ his tenants to pay their rent.

Priming the electorate for reform

I've been testing an idea for the last month using Facebook ads. A big problem, as I see it, with
the AV campaign was we didn't explain what the problem is, that we don't have
democracy with the current set-up, before you argue about whose fault it is
and what should be done. Take Back Parliament have a petition on essentially
that, but, if I may say so, it comes over as very activista. If we are to
prime the general electorate to want reform we need to get to those who

Among all the admin there are two interesting items. Overall Strategy and Membership Strategy.

Dorset 4 Democracy, after a hiatus and restructure, moves ahead with the launch of its new website and plans for the future.

The site is in development but as stands has a blog page and a home page.

The Democratic Reform Party

The Democratic Reform Party is a newly launched movement calling for democratic reforms right across the board. It is based on the belief that the future of politics must be more honest, transparent and inclusive. As such it is currently creating an Online Parliament to allow all people a voice in policy development. It believes that such an Online Parliament is one element of a new decentralised politics, which will be more efficient as it will stop those at the top having to decide everything, and thus prioritising a few key areas at the expense of others.

Should this happen in a functioning democracy? Fascinating graphic from the New York times which shows how for the United States between 1947 and 1979 general wealth rose in line with productivity, then how from 1980 that link has been broken with the most wealthy benefiting disproportionately. The question is why have democratic mechanisms failed to prevent this.

This is a link to a really excellent piece of campaigning done by Oxfam. Although violence against women is somewhat off topic for this forum it's well worth reading for the depth of thinking applied to understanding how to make change happen. Models which we can use in our campaigns.

Formalising Take Back Parliament

Where next for Take Back Parliament? Following the referendum, the existing Take Back Parliament steering group decided to continue the campaign with support from Unlock Democracy (which it is now formally a project of) and the Electoral Reform Society, with a specific focus on direct action and supporting local groups.

We now need to set up the steering group on a more permanent - and democratic - footing. The proposal is to give all Take Back Parliament supporters a chance to seek election - and vote - in the steering group elections.

Maintaining Momentum

Not surprisingly, the idea of electoral reform has completely dropped off the news radar. So I've been trying to think of various ways in which we can maintain a presence in the papers... The idea of a march for democracy as mentioned at the ERS AGM was an excellent one and it got me thinking... How about by-elections? One thing that is almost guaranteed is that there will be one over the course of a parliament. Could Unlock Democracy or others put forward a 'democracy first' candidate?

I really enjoyed this year's AGM especially as I was able to get some great photos. So I've done a visual blog with some of the better pictures. All in all it was a good day. Interesting people debating things I care about and a positive council meeting which augers very well for the future.

Avaaz Clean up UK media! campaign

Murdoch's fall from grace has opened a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen our democracy -- politicians are thinking about new rules for our media. A 20% limit on media ownership would cut his stranglehold on our democracy. But MPs may not go that far unless they are forced. A new direct democracy initiative will trigger a parliamentary debate when we reach 100,000 signatures.
